Self-defense options you may have never seen before

Whether at home, in the car, or just to do business, everyone wants to feel safe. Unfortunately, there are times when you may need to take some self-defense to protect yourself, your family or your family. If you spend a lot of time checking out different types of self-defense weapons and training, there is no doubt that you can see shops and websites offering everything from pistols and shotguns to pepper sprays and martial arts classes. If these standard methods are not suitable for you, here are some other suggestions [some serious, some less serious]:

  1. Instead of a pepper spray, use a can of wasp and bumblebee spray. It is easy to obtain and has an effective range of up to 20 feet, while most pepper spray products have an effective range of 6 to 8 feet.
  2. Steel gloves are sewn into the knuckles. They look harmless, but work like blackjack and can be obtained from several different vendors via the Internet. You can also find a similar baseball cap and sew steel shots on the hat itself - don't know what kind of comfort to wear.
  3. A can of WD-40 and butane lighter is a good miniature flamethrower. However, collateral damage can be a problem.
  4. The sharp edge of one of your credit cards can make a fairly efficient [and seemingly innocent] weapon for scanning a person at close range.
  5. How about a slingshot with a wrist support and a bag of golf or ball bearings? If you use a good quality slingshot and can actually hit your target, it takes a lot of practice to become proficient but it can cause some serious damage.
  6. Hockey sticks have many advantages in self-defense. It's a very good weapon for cutting something or someone, and if you carry one outside, it doesn't look particularly inappropriate.
  7. For family defense, one or two big dogs are a good choice. If you don't have or don't want a big dog, then a continuous ring tape or a dog called cd can do the same.
  8. Kevlar gloves provide some protection against knife attacks.
  9. Some experts recommend biting people - not a normal bite, but more of the order in which the bulldog bites, preferably on the ear or finger.
  10. One of the "unbreakable" umbrellas sold on the Internet provides a way for the attacker to keep a distance; if you have ever seen a passenger vying for the London Underground, you can appreciate the use of an umbrella as an offensive weapon.
  11. If you want a gun to defend yourself, you can check out Palm Pistol. It is a single-shot 38-caliber pistol that fits the palm of your hand. Designed for the elderly or disabled, they have limited flexibility and shoot with their thumbs instead of their index fingers. It has been classified as a "medical device" by the FDA.
  12. If you really want to avoid any confrontation, you can try to leave some money or valuables on the table near the door or window, and hope that anyone who breaks in will just "take money to run."
I hope these suggestions can provide you with some new self-defense options. If you really get into family defense, you might get a tip from the army ranger I've heard. He manipulated his porch so that if you turn the light switch on, the lights on the porch would light up; if you flip the switch down, it would ignite a small amount of explosives - enough to stop those who wanted to break the front door. In any case, it takes some time to consider self-defense - you never know when you need to have some way to protect yourself.
