Rhubarb method

Rhubarb:

History:

It is not clear where or what the source of rhubarb is. The example of rhubarb in China dates back to 2700 BC, but the Dahuang River was also found on the banks of the Volga River.

Whatever the source of rhubarb; the plant was used as the most effective drug with laxative properties during the plague.

Marco Polo is the person who brought the factory to Europe. The first rhubarb planted in England was in Oxfordshire, Banbury.

My own rhubarb history was in the early 1940s when my grandfather picked it in his garden. Without it, I have never known a garden.

Why plant rhubarb:

Rhubarb has a lot of secrets, some of which are listed below:

Rich in calcium, vitamins A, K, C and B complex vitamins, potassium, manganese, antioxidants such as lycopene and anthocyanins. Many other vitamins and minerals help maintain the vital health of all of us.

Because of vitamin A, eating rhubarb is very beneficial to your eyes.

Keep bones and teeth strong due to calcium levels.

Like aloe vera, rhubarb helps support a strong immune system.

Rhubarb is good for your heart, with low fat and calories.

Its potassium content means eating rhubarb helps prevent high blood pressure.

Rhubarb is known for preventing constipation.

Because one of the world's lowest calorie crops is very useful for people who are trying to lose weight.

Warning word:

Because of the vividness of rhubarb, if you have kidney disease, you should quit it.

Do not eat or eat leaves because they contain high levels of oxalic acid.

If each of you has ever encountered a Chinese variety, don't eat it because it is a poison. In the Middle Ages, the Chinese used it to kill people, use it to make tea, and invite their friends & afternoons and cakes.

The only Chinese varieties I know of in Europe are Edinburgh and the Oxford Botanical Garden. By the way, they don't have tea shops.

The place where rhubarb is in the garden:

It may be one of the most neglected plants in the entire garden. In my opinion, this is a shame to admire, it can provide food from the end of February until the first frost.

The reason why rhubarb is not handled properly is that it can grow almost anywhere, so no proper care is given to ensure the production of first-rate crops.

The position of rhubarb in rotation:

While common types of rhubarb can grow and multiply on cold clay, growers recognize that early crops and the best summer stems grow on well-fertilized soils that have been fed with organic fertilizer.

When you make a rhubarb bed, please note that plants can grow for fifteen years if given proper treatment and soil.

Planting a rhubarb bed:

The new bed of rhubarb was made in the deep-digged soil in March and is generally open.

Divide rhubarb separately by one yard. Also try to ensure that there are no more than three "eyes" on each root. Fix the soil around the plants and water if the weather is dry during planting.

It is a good idea to lay some compost cover around the plants, but don't do it on the growing tip.

It is important to keep the bed clear of the weeds and remove the stems in advance growth.

Growing from seeds:

Considering that rhubarb is easy to grow from seeds, it is surprising that not many people use this method. Seeds can be sown in seed boxes or pots during March and allowed to germinate in a cold frame.

Seedlings can then be opened at the end of April.

Another way is to wait until mid-April and then plant the seeds in the open air.

With the growth of rhubarb, it is very important that you do not harvest in the first season.

One reason to use seeds to grow rhubarb is if you are looking for rare species that can only be found in other countries and must be sent by post. Many people use seeds.

Forced rhubarb:

Mature rhubarb roots can be easily forged by covering the sturdy crown with a bottomless box or large basin and surrounding the covering with a mild organic material.

The best time to start forging rhubarb is in January for the best results.

The plants are first cleaned by weaving and removing any dead leaves around the crown.

Forcing rhubarb outside should take about 8 weeks.

If you have a heated greenhouse, another way is to lift the roots and place them in the semi-dark near the heat source. Surrounded by a leafy soil and water, warm water is used from time to time.

Rhubarb quickly produces edible stems. Execute only once in the life of root. This method of forcing rhubarb takes about 6 weeks to harvest.

Disease:

The main disease of rhubarb is root rot. The base of the stem becomes swollen and distorted. The leaves become puce colors. The crown of a plant usually softens and rots.

The way to control this situation is to dig and burn and replant in another part of the garden.

Rhubarb does not like water. I lost a year when the Thames drowned my distribution plot for eight weeks a year.

Harvesting rhubarb:

Don't harvest in the first year, and don't plant rhubarb from the seeds. Don't harvest the first two years.

Never cut a rhubarb with a knife. What you do is pull firmly from the base while slightly twisting.

My rhubarb outside produces stems from May to August. This will always depend on the year. Hot / cold, wet / dry.

Please note that the leaves are toxic, but they can be used fairly safely in composting or as a covering.

Variety:

Some of the best rhubarb varieties are:

Livingston: This is a special rhubarb because it is an autumn crop that can be harvested from September until the first frost.

Timperley: One of the earliest breeds, very good forcing. Although not very sweet, you can pull your rhubarb at the end of February or early March to make your neighbors jealous.

Victoria: This is the most widely cultivated variety with a simple sweet taste.

You can buy these from Mr. DT Brown and Mr. Fothergill. Both are British companies.

How do I use rhubarb:

I only spread the place to eat rhubarb every day of the year: I can eat fresh and then freeze for the rest of the time.

Of course, for those who wish you could do it: jam, kimchi, egg tarts, etc.

There is no shortage of recipes on the Internet.

An interesting use of rhubarb I use is to boil the discarded leaves, let the "tea" cool, sift and pour the cabbage.

By doing this, you can stop the butterfly from laying eggs on your crop. They can't stand the smell and go somewhere else.

So grow up very well, enjoy your rhubarb, accept the challenge, and plant rhubarb every month of the year.
