Painting on silk usually requires some resistance, because otherwise the dye will spread uncontrollably on the silk. Once the dye is placed on the silk, it cannot be removed easily or effectively, so the resist can play a major role in your painting.
The most popular resists are waxes and tooth gels. If these are placed on silk, the area will not be infiltrated by the dye. Then you can draw other areas and know that the dye will only go where you want it. However, silk may be very unpredictable, which is both a blessing and a curse! We have the best will in the world, we can [and often do] do things unexpectedly, so you can't be too frustrated and try to treat every accident as an opportunity. You will quickly learn your own skills to hide any mistakes. If the dye oozes out of the resist, most of the paintings will not exceed the redemption range. That's why popular themes are flowers, landscapes, etc. These can easily get an extra ' if the dye leaks, add trees/leaves/petals!
Wax resistance from
Also known as batik, it is used in fabric design around the world. The waxed wax is heated in a can and stripped or coated onto the wire to form a resist. In this way, a plurality of colors can be formed on the silk, each layer covering the wax. The main limitation of wax protection is that it is difficult to block the details in this way.
Gutta Resist
Gutta is a rubber-based liquid with a variety of colors and transparency to choose from. You paint it on your silk as a contour and then apply it with iron or steam fixing dye. If you are considering the use of gutta-percha, please note: be sure to buy it in a small plastic bottle with a lid instead of the type in the tube. Tube is an absolute nightmare! The bottle type can also be very frustrating, but with some practice you should be fine. You can trace the design back to your silk and cover it with a tooth gel. It takes about half an hour to dry before painting. The main disadvantage of tooth gel is that it leaves "stained glass". The effect outline Many people think of silk painting. If you like this effect, that's fine. If you don't like it, you have to find your own style!
Pre-Gutta Designs
Silk that has been printed with design can be purchased. If you have just started using silk painting, this is great because it allows you to forget the outline and continue your painting. I highly recommend using a pre-printed gutta-percha design before attempting to create your own design.
