Martial arts training emphasizes proper breathing skills. Nogare breathing is specific to karate, but can be included in any style. As always, consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program.
Nogare Breathing
- With your feet and shoulders wide, stand upright and relax with your arms.
- Take a deep breath through your nose and raise your arms to the chest level, keeping your hands open.
- Place your hands on your chest and force air into your abdomen. Put your breath on your lower abdomen for a while.
- The tongue relaxes behind the upper teeth and exhales slowly.
- Keep the tongue behind the upper teeth to help you breathe quietly.
- Repeat the exercise twice more.
When blocking strikes or offering martial arts or self-defense techniques, force and kiai exhale - or shout. Watch weightlifting training or competitions or other martial arts training and you will find that they also use this form of breathing. Weightlifters yell and push heavy objects while exhaling. Many athletes, including baseball and football players, and even tennis players scream, scream or scream during practice or competition. They are trained to realize that strong exhalation makes their efforts more effective and stronger.
