The hairless nature of this variety is easily exposed to solar radiation and sunburn. Repeated sunburn can cause skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma, which is like an ulcer sore that is difficult to heal, healing and gradually getting bigger. Squamous cell carcinoma is infected and can bleed and cause discomfort. Actinic dermatitis can also develop from chronic UV radiation and skin changes that block hair follicles. A large number of discharged sinuses can be produced which exude substances that accumulate deep in the skin.
Chinese crested dog breeds also suffer from atopic dermatitis. Many of these dogs are affected. Atopic dermatitis often occurs in the hairless parts of the body. In normal hair-covered varieties, atopic dermatitis is manifested in the foot, groin, armpit or arm depression, the concave or inner surface of the abdomen and ears. Until recently, the understanding of canine atopic dermatitis was the inhalation of allergens. This key fact is still true, but it is only part of the story. A recent breakthrough was the discovery of a defect in the skin of dogs with atopic dermatitis. The skin barrier lacks a protein called sphingosine. No sphingosine can cause skin leakage. Moisture escapes from the skin, causing the skin to dry out. Allergens trigger an immune response through the skin, manifesting as an itchy rash.
Therefore, most of the hairless Chinese Crested dogs have no hair protection. In Chinese crested dogs with canine atopic dermatitis, the maddening itchy rash can almost wrap the entire body.
There are many natural remedies that can really help.
